How Much Does a Private Pilot License Cost in Dallas?

Here’s exactly what I charge at IndieFlight (Lancaster Regional Airport, KLNC, just south of Dallas) and what else to budget for. Where a number isn’t listed, ask and I’ll give you current figures.

IndieFlight prices

Discovery flightFree
Private pilot trainingPricing depends on your pace — ask for a custom plan
Cessna 150 N5516G rental$100/hr wet (fuel included)
Flight & ground instruction$60/hr
One hour of dual in N5516G$160 ($100 aircraft + $60 instruction)
Instruction in your own aircraft$60/hr (you cover your aircraft’s costs)

Other costs to budget for

  • FAA medical exam (from an aviation medical examiner)
  • FAA knowledge test fee (testing center)
  • Practical test (checkride) fee paid to the designated pilot examiner
  • Headset, charts or apps, and study materials

These are paid to third parties, not to IndieFlight, and change over time, so check current prices when you book.

What drives your total

The FAA minimum is 40 hours, but most students need more. The biggest factor is consistency: flying regularly means you build on the last lesson instead of relearning it. Two-hour lessons and preparing on the ground before every flight keep airplane time for flying.

Why a Cessna 150 helps

The Cessna 150 is one of the most economical trainers flying. At $100/hr wet, N5516G keeps aircraft cost per hour low, and it’s the same kind of airplane I trained in on my own path to CFI.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private pilot license cost in Dallas?

At IndieFlight (Lancaster Regional Airport, south of Dallas), private pilot pricing depends on your pace and I build a custom plan for each student, and the Cessna 150 rents for $100/hr wet. Your total depends on how many hours you need and on separate costs such as the medical, knowledge test, examiner fee, headset and materials.

What’s the minimum number of hours?

40 hours total under Part 61 (14 CFR 61.109). Most students need more, so budget beyond the minimum.

How can I keep the cost down?

Fly consistently so you don’t relearn skills between lessons, prepare before each lesson, and pass the knowledge test during training. Training in an economical airplane like a Cessna 150, or in one you own, also helps.

Is the discovery flight free?

Yes, the discovery flight is free.
